![]() Most critics come from the same background they now criticise. Is that odd? But one should never forget about the way most critics were before becoming critics. Unfortunately, in the public eye, the positive side of something isn’t half as interesting than dirtying someone’s reputations. Yes, definitely not everything that’s been written about us is crap and I’ve never claimed that it was. As a piece of the Tangerine Dream continuum, however, Raum satisfies: Its unashamed drift and scale pay a tribute to a world where music is huge, omnipresent, and never ending. If you had to say just one good thing about the work of the professional critics, what would it be? By contrast, the opening “Continuum” sounds almost hemmed in by the conventions of percussion, its rather strait-laced drum-machine beats unworthy of the synth sprawl they sheepishly try to rally into place. “You’re Always On Time” makes up for its weakling eight-minute runtime with one of the album’s strongest melodies, a mournful synthesizer riff that is just unpredictable enough to keep it from lapsing into parody, while “Along the Canal” combines a gloomy chord sequence with a synth effect that patters like rain along a gutter, a mixture of form and function so emotively epic it could paint the Grand Canyon blue. Tangerine Dream are grandmasters of space and melody, and “Raum” shows them at their architectural best, their work as airily palatial as a castle made of cloud. Raum’s 15-minute title track, in particular, is a throwback to the omniscient ambience of 1972’s Zeit, a shimmering Moog bassline summoning forth synth sweeps as potent as rocket fuel, slowly tapering off into the elegant, dreamy drones of Hoshiko Yamane’s electric violin, before the Moog returns to guide the listener home. After 2014’s Phaedra Farewell Tour, Froese decided that the group should return to the formula of synths, sequencers, and electric violin that Tangerine Dream employed in the ’70s and ’80s, “not copying it but recreating that style with present technology,” said Quaeschning. Raum doesn’t really break any barriers, but nor was it intended to. In the late ’70s and early ’80s their sound became slicker and more cinematic, soundtracking films like Sorcerer, Thief, and even Risky Business. ![]() Their first studio album, 1970’s Electronic Meditation, featured eerie found sounds among more conventional rock instruments, and from 1971’s Alpha Centauri onward-three years before Kraftwerk’s Autobahn-Tangerine Dream threw themselves into electronic instrumentation. Like the Dead, Tangerine Dream were once innovators, a kind of proto- Kraftwerk best enjoyed semi-horizontally while ensconced in a bean-bag chair. According to Thorsten Quaeschning, who has been with Tangerine Dream since 2005, Froese and his wife Bianca made plans for the band to continue after his death, and Raum was produced with access to Froese’s Cubase arrangements and tape archive of recordings from 1977 to 2013. Raum is the second album the group has released since Froese’s passing, and he features in both spirit and sound. Even the death of founding member Edgar Froese in 2015 could not stop a band as enduring as Tangerine Dream. ![]() ![]() ![]() In-game events: During Steam Next Fest, players can participate in four exciting events (listed below). This is a vector-drawing program, analagous to Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator. Fortunately, there is free software that will do it for us. This is complicated by the need to distinguish between the colors of the pixels. How can we do this? It actually requires some pretty sophisticated computing to analyze a bitmap and realize that the pixels are arranged in a curve or a line or whatever. ![]() Suppose we have a bitmap and we want to convert it to a vector. Okay, enough background, now let's solve your problem. The laser turns on, follows the path, then turns off. Common computer file formats for vectors are DXF, SVG, AI, CDR, PPT, and PPTX (yes, PowerPoint).įrom a laser perspective, because the computer controlling the laser understands each element (line, curve, etc), it can direct the laser to follow that "path", which is how we cut things out. Because the computer understands that each element is a line or a circle, or whatever, the computer can also understand how to manipulate or modify those lines, circles, and curves. Circles are denoted by the X,Y coordinate of the center, the radius, and the ends of the arc. There's a bit more to the equation to describe where the ends of the line are located. Remember your high-school geometry class? We know an infinite line can be represented by y=mx+b. With a vector image, the computer stores mathematical equations for the lines and curves. The second type of image the computer can understand is a "vector". ![]() That's why we see our lasers going back and forth, row by row to mark our image onto wood, glass, or whatever. ![]() Common computer file formats for bitmaps are jpg, JPG, BMP, TIF, TIFF, GIF, PNG.įrom a laser perspective, because the laser is controlled by a computer, all it can do is "scan" or "raster" this image - it goes along the row and fires the laser according to the color of the dot. The computer has no idea what all those dots represent - it doesn't know that they're arranged to form a straight line, or a curve, or a letter, or a dog. The computer knows the first pixel (dot) is black, and the next one is red, and the next three are blue, and so on, dot-by-dot and row-by-row. To the computer, a bitmap is an array (map) of dots (bits). When we take a picture using our phones (or digital camera), or when we draw something in Photoshop, we are creating a bitmap. ![]() The most common images we see on our computers are "bitmaps". According to the drive towards higher entropy, the formation of water from hydrogen and oxygen is an unfavorable reaction. ![]() The entropy change for this reaction is highly negative because three gaseous molecules are being converted into two liquid molecules. Thus, in this reaction, the reactants are more disordered than the products. There are more moles of gas in the reactants, 4 moles of gas (with 1 mole of ethylene and 3 moles of oxygen) compared to the products (only 2 moles of carbon dioxide gas), while the other product is a liquid. Recall that gases are more disordered than liquids. The negative value indicates there is a decrease in entropy.Įven without calculating the exact entropy change, the decrease in entropy can be predicted by examining the reaction. The difference between the products and the reactants equals negative 268 J/K for the standard entropy change of the combustion of ethylene. The net entropy of the products equals 567.6 J/K, and the net entropy of the reactants is 835.4 J/K. Substituting the values for molar entropies of reactants and products from the reference table yields −. Note that, unlike standard enthalpies of formation of elements, which are zero, standard molar entropies of all substances are greater than zero at 298 K. The standard entropy change for the reaction equals the sum of 2 times the standard entropy of carbon dioxide gas and 2 times the standard entropy of water, minus the sum of the standard entropy of ethylene gas and 3 times the standard entropy of oxygen. So, like enthalpy changes, entropy changes can be from calculated reference tables of standard molar entropies.įor a reaction occurring under standard conditions, the associated entropy change is determined by the difference between the sum of the standard molar entropies of the products multiplied by their stoichiometric coefficients and the sum of the standard molar entropies of the reactants multiplied by their stoichiometric coefficients.Ĭonsider the combustion of ethylene under standard conditions, where 1 mole of ethylene gas reacts with 3 moles of oxygen gas to produce 2 moles of carbon dioxide gas and 2 moles of water. Enthalpy changes associated with a chemical reaction can be measured with a calorimeter, but the entropy change associated with a reaction cannot be directly measured.Įntropy is a state function, which means that the change in entropy depends solely on the initial and final states of a system. ![]() ![]() ![]() We succumb to that bowl of Ben & Jerry’s. All these other points are moot unless it’s a place where you actually show up to train. It should be somewhere that you will go to train consistently. That said, the bathrooms should be clean ( always ), there should be the tools necessary to wipe off benches (and it should be encouraged and done so by the staff… no one wants MRSA), the equipment should be kept in working order and stored in a logical and safe manner, and members should be told (or better yet, just know ) that they need to put their equipment back. Dust and dirt on the floor, assuming it’s not excessive, is acceptable from a place where dozens of people walk daily. If a gym is being used regularly, it will have seemingly perpetual dirt in the corners and hard-to-reach areas. I don’t expect a gym to be immaculate, in fact, that’s kinda weird to me. I never made the mistake of going there again after dusk. True story: I was a member at a gym that virtually turned into a club after 5pm (shimmery workout clothes, techno club music, and dudes trying to pick up ladies while doing bicep curls…) and it was horrible. A gym that has more people yakking than training is not a conducive environment for staying on task. It’s not there to help you pick up a date, flirt, converse for 30 minutes, or leer at other trainees. That’s how you get stronger and actually make a difference with your body. I can sense a rabbit hole of a rant coming on, so I’ll stop there and conclude with this: pick up heavy junk. Most weight machines are designed to be “comfortable” and confine the body to movements that it doesn’t actually perform in real life. I’m not saying that gyms shouldn’t stock machines (cardio or weight), buuuuut strength happens though discomfort. Here is where I am strongly biased: if a gym doesn’t have Olympic barbells, weight plates, dumbbells (up to at least 100lbs), squat racks, and the allowance of deadlifting, they’re not in the business of encouraging strength but only perpetuating the mediocrity of human fitness. Note that these are entirely my opinions, though said opinions are based on 14 years of training and the many, many gyms I’ve stepped into over the years. ![]() So how do you find a new gym? Latest news on the next Animal Crossing game Option 2: We’ll get a brand new Mario adventure for the next game That probably rules out another sideline game next, but if the timing for the sequel to Odyssey throws it into doubt the next option is something completely new. We’ve had a lot of Mario sports titles since Odyssey came out, along with Sparks of Hope, Super Mario Party Superstars, Paper Mario The Origami King, Maker 2 and the 3D All Stars remake series. Mario Galaxy 2 came out just three years after the first game and Yoshi’s Island released five years after Super Mario World, so we might already be past the threshold of possibility. The problem with the sequel theory is that it’s already been six years since the last game, which is kind of unheard of. With Bowser’s Fury exploring the idea of an open world it would be impressive for the next game in the 3D series to take this to a new level of genius. The biggest thing would be just to deliver some really cool new worlds and bosses with more of the brilliantly creative platform action and it’ll be a gem. It would be cool to combine this with a little of the Galaxy magic with Lumas and Rosalina getting in on the story and setting action, but they don’t need this to make the game great. ![]() ![]() That would give us Cappy and maybe a few new gameplay mechanics in a whole new adventure with the ship taking the team to new worlds. titles and it’s something that would probably work best for Odyssey 2. There are more direct comparisons in the series, though, with the likes of Super Mario Galaxy 2 being very close to the previous game. 2 is totally different to the first side-scrolling platform game and it was a similar case with Super Mario World 2 Yoshi’s Island. If that isn’t enough, some of the sequels are so different from their predecessors that they’re almost unrecognizable in comparison and that could well be the case with the next game. There was no Super Mario 64 2 or Super Mario Sunshine Returns, which is shame, because… well… they would be epic. That being said, not all games in the series get a sequel, direct or otherwise, so it’s far from a foregone conclusion. Whether or not this will involve Cappy is open for debate, but it does stand to reason considering the success of the first game and it’s enduring impact on Nintendo Switch sales. Such positive impacts are the driving forces behind the emergence of AV technology, making it a viable, economic model in the near future and beyond. It is estimated that the direct societal value that will be created will be between 0.2 and 1.9 trillion dollars annually by 2025. The AV is associated with a variety of positive societal impacts such as a safer transport system, a lower cost of transport as well as enabling a modicum of mobility to the non-ambulatory and disabled as well as to those in lower income households. ![]() Therefore, it is incredibly important to be prepared for such eventualities and to understand the challenges that lie ahead while embracing and welcoming the ensuing opportunities. Based on the deployment and adoption of previous smart vehicle technologies (like automatic transmission and hybrid-electric drive), the forecast is that AVs are expected to constitute around 50 % of vehicle sales, 30 % of vehicles, and 40 % of all vehicle travel by 2040. Perhaps, the middle of the current century will be the maturity years of the AV market. Figure 1 provides an overview of the competition between the giant car makers. includes vehicle automation on the list of the top ten disruptive technologies of the future.Īs a result of fierce competition among car manufacturers, the year 2020 has been slated as a horizon year to offer commercial AVs to the general market. An example is Uber which is sweeping cities to the extent that taxi companies are struggling to retain business and to remain competitive. In light of looming new ideas and technologies such as social networks, smart phones, and AVs, some scholars have emphatically warned that the landscape of transportation is rapidly changing. The rapid development of communication technology and the need to cater to the aging population in developed countries has potentially made AVs a necessity and a vital business paradigm. Moreover, the automotive industry spends around €77 billion worldwide on R&D in order to nurture innovation and to stay competitive. For example, the advent of the Google car brought AVs to the spotlight. Nevertheless, there has been an acceleration in the research and development efforts in the last decade to bring the idea of the AV to fruition. Although the idea of driverless vehicles has been around for decades, the exorbitant costs have hindered large-scale production. These technologies have given rise to the prospect of autonomous vehicle (AV) technology which aims to reduce crashes, energy consumption, pollution, and congestion while at the same time increasing transport accessibility. New technologies in communication and robotics have had a substantial influence on our daily lifestyle of which transportation is no exception. This study contributes to the literature on two fronts: (i) it attempts to shed light on future opportunities as well as possible hurdles associated with AV technology and (ii) it conceptualizes a navigation model for the AV which leads to highly efficient traffic circulations. To this end, we propose a conceptual navigation model based on a fleet of AVs that are centrally dispatched over a network seeking system optimization. Connected-vehicle technology provides a great opportunity to implement an efficient and intelligent routing system. A major knowledge gap exists in AV technology with respect to routing behaviors. An indispensable part of a prospective AV development is communication over cars and infrastructure (connected vehicles). This paper provides a comprehensive review of the relevant literature and explores a broad spectrum of issues from safety to machine ethics. This emerging technology also has far-reaching applications and implications beyond all current expectations. AV technologies can decrease the transportation cost and increase accessibility to low-income households and persons with mobility issues. ![]() This study investigates the challenges and opportunities pertaining to transportation policies that may arise as a result of emerging autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies. ![]() |
